Hans Albrecht Bethe was born on July 2, 1906, in Strasbourg, Alsace-Lorraine, to a family of modest means.

Alice Cook House, Hans Bethe House, Carl Becker House, William Keeton House, and Flora Rose House are the five houses of the West Campus House System, Cornell's Residential College initiative. Hans Bethe House is the third of five residential colleges built at Cornell in the first decade of the 21st century comprising the university’s West Campus House System.

He attended the University of Munich, studying with Arnold Sommerfeld, and after receiving his degree in 1928, taught at Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Munich.
