He learned painting and woodblock print making from his father from an early age and is thought of as one of the 20th Century masters of the art form. Hiroshi married Fujio Yoshida (1887-1987), the daughter of his adoptive father. Hiroshi Yoshida was born September 19, 1876 with the name “Ueda Hiroshi” in Kurume, Fukuoka prefecture, Japan. In the 1920s, however, Yoshida Hiroshi—the key figure in this exhibition, turned to printmaking, creating a series of remarkable naturalistic prints. In honor of their legacy, the Art Institute of Chicago hosted an exhibition featuring a selection of their works in Fall 2018. Printmaker Daryl Howard will share a brief history of Japanese woodblock printmaking and the amazing Yoshida family. Yoshida was born in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture, the second son of Ueda Tsukane, a schoolteacher from an old samurai family.
