On June 5, 1939, at the All-Union Conference of Stage Directors, Meyerhold made a speech apparently defending the principles he had pursued throughout his career. He was born in a Lutheran German family which lived in the Russian city of Penza.
At the age of twenty-one he changed his original name (Karl Theodor Kasimir) to Vsevolod, in honor of Vsevolod Garsin, a young pessimistic writer who had committed suicide. Vsevolod Meyerhold was a Russian and Soviet actor and theater director, and the creator of a new acting system called “biomechanics”. Immediately after the conference he was arrested. The closed environment of family education motivated Meyerhold to always feel more Russian than German and more orthodox than Protestant. Nevertheless, the official attacks on his "formalism" continued, and on Jan. 8, 1938, the Meyerhold Theatre was liquidated.
It is hard to overestimate his role in the development of the Russian theater. Russian sources list the date of his death in prison as 1940 or 1942. Meyerhold costumed as Ivan the Terrible.
