Hill, an immigrant worker frequently facing unemployment and underemployment, became a popular songwriter and cartoonist for the union. Joe Hill, born Joel Emmanuel Hägglund and also known as Joseph Hillström, was a Swedish-American labor activist, songwriter, and member of the Industrial Workers of the World. Joe Hill, also called Joe Hillstrom, original name Joel Emmanuel Hägglund, (born October 7, 1879, Gävle, Sweden—died November 19, 1915, Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.), Swedish-born American songwriter and organizer for the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW); his execution for an alleged robbery-murder made him a martyr and folk hero in the radical American labour movement. A native Swedish speaker, he learned English during the early 1900s, while working various jobs from New York to San Francisco. In a limited edition anthology commemorating Richard Matheson (I Am Legend), titled He Is Legend, Joe Hill and Stephen King included their 2009 novella, “Throttle”. Joe Hill, alias Joseph Hillstrom, alias Joel Hagglund, was a blond, secretive man with a long, thin face, originally from Sweden, who came to Utah in 1913. A few include: John Dos Passos who wrote his book, 1919 on Joe Hill, Earl Robinson, whose song, "I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night," has been remade by various musicians, and Barry Stevens, who wrote a play entitled The Man who Never Died.
