Tanganyika was a territory located on the continent of Africa, and administered by the United Kingdom from 1916 until 1961. Initially the British used the governing structures established by the Germans to exercise rule over Tanganyika, but under the Governorship of Sir Donald Cameron they attempted to implement the system of indirect rule that the Germans had failed to achieve (Mpangala 1999 44-45). British policy was to rule indirectly through African leaders.
